Encouraging Nature: Propagating, Growing and Using Native Perennials

Celebrate Year of the Native Plants at the Great Swamp Conservancy!

Native perennials meet the needs of native pollinators and fill a vital role in the garden. Locally grown native perennials produced by seed are adapted to the area in which they are produced. Propagating these plants is relatively easy once their germination requirements are met. Ellen will discuss seed propagation techniques, how to acquire seed and a hands -on demonstration will include a tray of seeds for everyone to take home with them to try.

About the Speaker: Ellen Folts is the co-owner of Amanda's Garden Native Perennial Nursery, located in Dansville, NY. She has a degree in agricultural and natural resources from SUNY Cobleskill and has worked in the horticultural field for more than three decades. She is a Senior New York State Certified Nursery and Landscape Professional. Ellen’s philosophy has been one of creating sustainable landscapes that give back to the environment. She accomplishes this by growing plants that are not only lovely to look at, but also the right plants for the ecological community in which they are planted.
