Wild Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk and Seminar

  • Great Swamp Conservancy, Inc. 8375 North Main St. Canastota United States (map)

Ever wonder what edible plants you pass when out for a walk in the woods? Or what useful herbal medicines may lay hidden in your backyard? Join Heather, aka The Botanical Hiker, for a slideshow presentation and guided plant walk here on the grounds of the beautiful Great Swamp. She will introduce you to easy-to-identify, nutritious and medicinal plants, share tips on how to harvest and prepare these plants, and most importantly, how to discern them from poisonous look-alikes. This activity is appropriate for the beginner to the expert and the walk will be easy to moderate in nature. Children welcome. Walk will be easy in nature.

About Heather Houskeeper: herbalist, long-distance hiker, and author. She has thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, Mountains to Sea Trail, Long Path, Florida Trail, Mid State Trail and is the first person to have hiked the Finger Lakes Trail and its six branches in one continuous trek. In her profession as The Botanical Hiker, Heather guides others into the natural world through seminars, workshops, and plant walks, striving to deepen their relationship with the natural world and its botanical inhabitants. She is Wild Food columnist at Dirt Magazine, the author of two guidebooks about edible and medicinal plants and has recently published her first narrative book, Love and the Long Path.
